Summary: The Snow Wolf is similar in construction
to the Mountain Norbert Joos, but wider throughout. This is
a light-weight ski that makes a great choice for the AT skier
or backcountry telemarker, but also a very capable all-mountain
ski.
The Snow Wolf is a light yet solid feeling ski. It's wide enough
for powder and narrow enough to be quick and solid on firm snow.
Like the Mountain, the Wolf can be a little unstable at high
speeds. Because of it's weight and all around ski-ability, the
Snow Wolf is one of our top picks AT and backcounty skiing.
The Snow Wolf works in conjunction with Volkl's new skin-clip
system. Pre-trimmed skins attach easily to the unique hole in
the tip of the ski. |
Built to compliment the original Mountain Norbert
Joos, we developed the Snow Wolf for softer snow adventures.
The Snow Wolf's wider dimensions are best suited to the conditions
found in the western North American backcountry. The Snow Wolf
is built with our Sensorwood Light core. |
Skiing magazine:
Testers all agreed that this is the best downhill performer of the light skis. Coming in at less than 6 pounds they were described as, "a snappy race-type ski" and "responsive and quick edge to edge". Overall a "high-energy and easy-to-turn ski in almost all conditions."
Backcountry Magazine: "I took
it to heavy and light powder, steeps, ice and everything in
between and found it to be a stable and reliable performer.
On steep corn, the snappy Snow Wolf rebounded enthusiastically
through every turn," said one tester.
Couloir: "It's been amazing to watch the transformation of testers' opinions on the Snow Wolf. Three years ago it was a light chattery ski only good for saving weight. Change the mix of testers and snow conditions, and voila, the ski rocks. This year it received raves across the board for it's solid edgehold on hardpack, especially - and repeatedly - at speed. In typical resort junk and mank, 'It danced through the snow like Barishnikov.' With a firm base, turns were crisp and snappy. In the deep, its dimensions do impose a limit, but our testers said it had amazing floation for how narrow it is. Definetly not the joke of the day, the Snow Wolf lives up to its name - lean and mean. To Volkl: Imagine a bigger and wider wolf?"
Powder Magazine: "Volkls are known as exceedingly
stable and well-built skis. The Snow Wolf embodies all of
the above plus something not usually found in Volkls: minimal
mass. Great on the long slogs, the Snow Wolf dances in the
fall line, where it can waltz or jitterbug with equal poise.
Traditionalists love this ski, as do females and smaller
men."
