Volkl M-Rock Telemark / AT Ski: Product Review
What the TelemarkSki staff thinks... What the manufacturer's Marketing Dept. thinks... What independent testers think...
Summary: The Mantra got a new topsheet and a new marketing pitch this season. The M-Rock has the exact same construction (with the exception of a better edge reinforcement) and dimensions as the old Mantra. Reliable and fun, the M-Rock is sure to satisfy the aggressive backcountry or cross-over skier looking for the proven performance of the Mantra of the past.

Using the sidecut from the original Mantra, we've designed a new backcountry ski for skiers who want the width to float in the powder with a lightweight, yet powerful ski. If they do encounter firm snow, the M Rock features two full sheets of titanium that give it rock solid stability and edge grip.

Skiing magazine:
AT "'This ski cuts through everything effortlessly,' said one tester. Bombproof on edge, the M Rock's torsional prowess made easy work of crud and slop. THe 130mm shovel keeps tips afloat, but the ski still turns on a dime. Gripes: It's a bit heavy for long tours. Props: Big-mountain chops with one-ski-quiver versatility."
Tele "The M Rock isn't what you'd call flashy. But it's reliable and stable, with insta-turn execution and a spot-on mix of glassy and damp. Gripes:Occasionally needs a wake-up call. Props: A perfect balance of power and finesse - a bomber platform with a lot of momentum."

Backcountry magazine: "Last year Volkl bowed to backcountry pressure for a bigger ski than the T-Rock (now four years old, archived with new graphics only) and brought in the Mantra from its alpine line. Now it's the M-Rock. East or west, this is a ski that commands respect and, depending on the skier, can demand constant attention. 'Predictable, even flex. drives through crud powerfully,' said a western tester. 'A blaster in chopped up crud,' said an Eastern tester. 'Very impressive ski. Lively short radius turns...great all-mountain ski,' added another. 'Give it what you got and be repaid with fun - out standing powder and crud ski [that] held well on ice at speed or going snow,' gushed a third."
