Scarpa Tornado Alpine Touring / Randonnee Boot: Product Review
What the TelemarkSki staff thinks... What the manufacturer's Marketing Dept. thinks... What independent testers think...

Summary: Designed with those who access off-piste terrain from the resort in mind, the Scarpa Tornado comes closer to true alpine boot feel and performace than most other alpine touring boots. With features such as an customizable forward lean, buckles that disperse pressure evenly over the foot, and interchangeable tongues (stiff for skiing and articulated for touring), it's hard to believe this boot could get any better. Its Ride Scarpa/Vibram sole with rubber inserts on the toe and heel for grip works with both alpine touring as well as alpine bindings. While perhaps not suitable for extended tours, the Tornado will deliver when it comes to serious downhill performance.

New Dual-Density PU construction offers rigidity where you need it without adding additional weight. The Tornado offers Alpine performance mated with AT versatility. The first TUV certified all-rubber sole works reliably with alpine and AT bindings and provides grip on snow and rock for those who want to take high performance gear off the beaten track. The Tornado offers great traction, whether ski mountaineering or climbing lift towers, without having to swap soles. Four buckles and a custom forward lean setting takes Freeride on a tour. Comes with two tongues: stiff for skiing and articulated for touring, Plus Fit Thermo Liners, adjustable spoiler, 4 buckles and power strap.
Backcountry magazine: " ...a big boot with a cuff that's noticable taller than the four-buckle, AT only boots...the articulated ski-walk tongue and the wide range of cuff movement make for pleasant day-long skinning...a surprisingly comfortable boot that drives any ski in bounds or out."

Couloir magazine: "Friends...spoke glowingly about the boots exceptional comfort and balance of forward flex, stiffness and tourability and highlights like the articulated powerstrap that helped distribute pressure evenly around the upper cuff. One point of concern though was the lack of wall-to-wall lugs on the mountaineering sole. Part of this backcountry sole is comprised of a hard anti-friction material that compromised traction while hiking and climbing, leading us to assume that the Tornado is aimed even more directly at the off-piste alpine skier rather than some scrambing extensively over hill and dale."

Powder Magazine: "Bridging alpine and randonnee worlds, the Tornado comes with four micro-adjustable buckles, a thermo-formable liner, interchang-eable DIN, alpine touring soles, and swappable tongues."
