Randonnee Boot: Product Review |

Summary - The F1 is the first AT boot of
its kind - adding a flexible bellows for touring comfort and
speed. This boot is designed for Randonnee Rally racers, but
is a great choice for any speed oriented skier.
The Scarpa F1 was developed for Randonnee racers and "fast-and-light"
skiers that want maximum comfort and speed while touring. The
bellows flex just like a tele boot while in tour mode, allowing
for a more natural feeling stride. One simple lever unlocks
the upper cuff and loosens the top buckle when switching from
ski to tour mode, and easily locks back down again when the
climb is over. This buckle system is a little confusing at first,
but once you've got it figured out it really does work well.
The benefits of the boots flex are only evident when using a
Dynafit binding, but chances are the type of skier who buys
this boot will be using a Dynafit binding anyways. This boot
is extremely light and made to go uphill fast, but actually
skis pretty well on the way down too. The F1 is not for everyone,
but if speed and weight are your top priorities you'll probably
love them

You wanted an ultra-lightweight AT boot-and
this year SCARPA grants your wish. Meet the F1-a boot originally
designed for European randoneé racing. This is the first-ever
AT boot to incorporate a flexible toe for maximum stride comfort.
The F1 also boasts a totally unique cuff-closure system. With
one pull of the closure-system lever, a skier can loosen the
cuff and buckle to move into touring mode-then easily snap it
shut, locking the cuff and tightening the buckle for downhill
performance. Designed for Dynafit-style bindings, the F1 comes
standard with a custom-moldable liner for long-haul comfort.
This is sure to become THE boot for weight-conscious AT skiers
who want to move light-and move fast.
-One of the lightest AT boots ever made
-Unique closure system allows for lightning-fast transitions
-Flexing toe for increased stride length |
Couloir: "Is the F1 a peek into the
future of backcountry skiing or a super specialized tool for
alpine-touring based ski racing? Well, it's a bit of both..the
F1 is really about Raid-type ski-mountaineering races and
getting as much natural kick-and-glide out of AT boots while
cranking forwards and upwards, all the while still dishing
up enough torque and drive for thrill ride descents over a
wide variety of terrain."
Backcountry magazine: "The long awaited F1 from Scarpa
debuts with a novel concept-an AT boot that flexes at the
ball of the foot. This flexibility promises a more natural
touring gait but only works with the frameless Dynafit bindings.
The lightweight F1 is aimed at those who value touring and
climbing ease, including randonnee racers..the top buckle
tensioner and forward lean lock are integrated into one lever
through a system of cables and cable guides. One flip and
your touring, one lock and you're turning."
