Summary - The M2 is a high performance
analog beacon which uses digital processing to provide flux
line alignment info, signal strength, and distance info.
The M2 is a single antenna analog beacon that uses digital
signal processing to provide flux line alignment, signal strength,
and distance information. One long antenna provides excellent
signal range of up to 80 meters. The Ortovox M2 features a
digital LCD display, making it the easiest and fastest analog
avalanche transceiver on the market.
Using the induction line method of search, the display indicates
distance to the victim the instant the first signal is detected.
The digital display shows the user when the beacon is aligned
with the transmitting flux line as well as when to adjust
the volume control switch. Continuous analog, "real-time"
audio is very intuitive and helpful in multiple burial situations.
From the very first signal, searchers have the combination
of both acoustic and visual signals to confirm direction and
distance to the victim.
The M2 is not as easy as a fully digital beacon for beginner
use, and does require a substantial amount of practice. Still,
this is the beacon of choice for many advanced users and most
avalanche professionals. |
This digital-analog device meets the highest
safety requirements. Recommended by experts and tested world-wide

Couloir: "If the F1
is a classic VW, then the M2, is its high performance sibling,
a Porshe, with rack and pinion steering (digital processing),
tight suspension (superb signal sensitivity), and a 5-speed
manual transmission (5-step attenuator/volume knob).
With a slightly longer single antenna, range and sensitivity
are increased. Digital processing tells users the user when
to shift (an LED lights up and an icon appears telling you
to turn the volume knob down), when the antenna is lined
up with the flux line (the arrow head is solid black) or
not (the arrow head is only outlined), how strong the signal
is (bar graph in arrow shaft), and how far away you are
(in meters).
The strap system is a bit less intuitive than the F1, but
like all Ortovox beacons, it the integrated "key" to turning
the beacon on. This beacon also allows you to operate without
the strap, giving you unimpeded range of motion.
The audio signal is a real-time echo of the victims' signal
making it the choice of advanced users in multiple burial
scenarios. "
