Karhu Jak BC 100 Telemark / AT Ski: Product Review
What the TelemarkSki staff thinks... What the manufacturer's Marketing Dept. thinks... What independent testers think...
Summary: This backcountry fatty is based off the Jak Team freeride model, but a pound lighter and with a climbing skin tail-clip-friendly tail. Wide and light, the BC 100 is the perfect backcountry powder board! AT and telemark powder hunters know the best snow is in the backcountry, and for those not wanting to sacrifice anything on the ride down, the BC 100 offers super-fat powder performance without the usual weight penalty. Using the proven platform and flotation of the Team 100, the BC 100 shaves over a pound with the Greenlight Core, Carbon Powerband and a lower profile tail that comes with a notch ready for skins. All the downhill pleasure, none of the uphill pain.

Couloir magazine: "Want 100mm of underfoot float without the weight penalty Super-Fats usually carry? The BC 100 uses Karhu's lighter Macrolite core and chops off the extra weight of the Jak Team Edition's twintip leaving a squared, slightly upturned tail that's better for skin attachments...The BC 100 looks shorter without the twin, and while effective edge length doesn't really change on the firm, in deeper snow testers said it skied smaller than the Team, with a shorter turn radius..."
AT: "Our AT posse appreciated the lightness of the BC 100, but found it less versatile when paralleled. Less confident at speed, the BC 100 remained committed to its quick-turning pattern."

Backcountry magazine: "Last year Karhu aimed this fatty at backcountry skiers who wanted to keep the deep-snow footprint of the Team but go lighter - and loose the twin tip. Karhu's new wood core lightens it further. It's best in softer snow and crud, and in modest turn shapes. In Western test conditions the 100 proved to have 'a mellow driver attitude, very nice relaxed ski, good for touring,' as one tester opined. The weight-saving layup was apparent to nearly all. But many testers found the cost was getting tossed in chunks and crud. Still, most found it lived up to its billing as a good backcountry ski. 'A big ski I'd be willing to carry,' said an Eastern tester, adding 'very light and active.' 'Great to float around in the powder...Light and nimble in the trees,' said another."
