Atomic Kailas Telemark / AT Ski: Product Review
What the TelemarkSki staff thinks... What the manufacturer's Marketing Dept. thinks... What independent testers think...
Summary: Fitting in between the Kongur and the Janak, the Kailas will please those looking for more width than the Kongur and more sidecut than the Janak. The Kailas is the telemark version of the Atomic Snoop Daddy. The Kailas is an all new ski that uses a sidecut that places it right in between the Kongur and the Janak for width. The sidecut makes this a great all mountain ski aimed a bit more toward off piste skiing. However, all testers have been surprised and impressed at how well the Kailas grips in icy conditions and it provides excellent response and turnability for short radius turns down the fall line. The torsional flex is rigid enough for hardpacked and the wide shovel and soft longitudinal flex make it float nicely in powder.

Sidecut:
'06-'07: 126/88/109
'07-'08: 125/88/111
Off-Piste: "New in the Atomic line up this season, the Kailas fills the void between the Kongur and the Janak. The Kailas retains a decidely solid Atomic ride but adds responsiveness uncharacteristic of its Austrian roots. Skiers looking for an easy initiating ski that can handle deep and mixed conditions will be right at home. Folks used to the more traditional feel of the Kongur (TMX) might take some time to adjust to this ski but the Kailas is a true all mountain board with a wide appeal. The ski is remarkably quick turn to turn given its healthy 88mm waist. There are not many skis pushing 90mm in the waist that appealed to such a wide variety of skiers. On the chairlift or on a tour, the Kailas is a new player for the quiver of one title."

Couloir: "A new entry from Atomic, the Kailas - named for the holy Mt. Kailas (22,028 feet) in northern Tibet - hopes to fill a void between the mountaineering mid-fats and the hard-charging Janak. Did it succeed? Said best by one of our testers, 'This is just what was missing from Atomic - the perfect blend of Tacora and Janak. It floats and is stable. Crisp, yet forgiving, quiver of one.' An everyday ski of confidence, the Kailas handled without a deep personality to a couple of testers, simply skiing quietly underfoot - always there, never having to think about it. A solid all-rounder through and through, the Kailas does stand out for day-in, day-out conditions. 'Solid, fast, and dependable. Provides confidence.' 'Pretty stable under speed. Not the best in pow for its size. Uniformly flexing and quick edge-to-edge.' 'Good, but didn't stand out as good or bad at any one thing.' 'Good swing-weight, reliable turns.'"
