| Atomic Diran Telemark / AT
Ski: Product Review |

| What the TelemarkSki staff thinks... |
What the manufacturer's Marketing Dept. thinks...

What independent testers think... |
Summary: The new Diran replaces Atomic's
TM:22. The shape and flex stay the same but the addition of
a magnesium cap significantly reduces the weight.
The Diran carves a super solid turn on hardpack, is quick and
snappy in the bumps, and loves soft snow too. This versatile
all-mountain ski is comfortable both on-piste and on the occasional
backcountry trip. Smooth, powerful, and snappy, the Diran makes
great turns in almost any type of terrain and snow conditions
|
Mt. Diran 7,273 meters, Pakistan.
Our most versatile ski. Mates effortless turn initiation with
with crampon-like edge hold on ice. Off-piste, the wide geometry
may be the only thing keeping your head above the pow. Great
fall-line response with big turn stability.
The Diran is similar to the rest of the Atomic Telemark/Randonnee line in that the top sheet and the first under laminate are Magnesium. The Diran is probably the narrowest performance oriented Tele/Rando ski in production by any company. The 72mm waist makes it the most responsive ski on the market with best fall line performance available. It also provides effective flotation in the deep. The 106/72/97 sidecut is one of the most popular shapes for BC skiing. It is narrow enough to make climbs and approaches easy work and it is wide enough to float well in deep untracked snow. |
Backcountry magazine: "Great
upper-intermediate ski for resorts and backcountry....A nice
groomer and light off-piste board with the classic Atomic
snappiness, but not as stiff."
Couloir: "Making a strong case for its on-piste carveability, the Diran was easily one of the top performers in the category for edgehold, but that grip came at a price as those same testers said the stiffness of the ski meant it suffered in off-piste conditions when they would have enjoyed a softer flex for easier initiation in short-swing turns. Best employed as a groomed groover and race-stock-style ripper at smoking speeds, the Diran will have hardpack hard-chargers happily adjusting their speed limitations between pit stops at the bottom of the hill." AT: "What felt like a demanding GS-style edgehold for telemark turns became a remarkably responsive hard and soft snow grip with pinpoint tracking when the Diran was skied with heels locked down. AT testers also remarked on the Diran's, 'immediate response ans positively buoyant kinetic energy." For alpine-style skiers and turn-earners alike, the Diran was the overall AT winner for its stability, its huge sweet spot and its ability to lock into whatever kind of rhythm our testers demanded from this lively and pleasing ski."
Off Piste: "A proven all around ski, the TM 22 has
a reputation as a utilitarian tool to meet your needs in and
out of the ski area. The ski responds well to all sizes of
skiers and boot styles. Regardless of your turn bias, from
casual backcountry user to helmet sportin' rippers, the TM22
serves well."
Skiing magazine:
"The Diran returns unchanged. Like its snappy predecessor, the popular TM:22, this light and quick stick shines in tight places--perfect for tree skiers and chute hounds. Some testers don't like the ultra-stiff tail" but overall is "balanced, predictable, and fast."
