Heat moldable liners have been a popular way to customize boots for years. Moldable liners offer the benefits of a custom fit, lighter weight, and increased warmth. This means happier feet in almost any situation. Liners can be molded multiple times if they pack out or are not molded correctly the first time.

If you have access to a local shop with experience fitting these liners, we strongly recommend having them do it for you. If you don't have any other options, you can do it yourself at home in a convection oven. Remember, if you burn or melt your liners yourself, they cannot be sent back under warranty!

How to mold your thermal liners

First off-take the liners out of the shell, pull the laces out (if you have them) and the foot beds out of your liner. You do not want to cook your liners with the foot beds or laces in the liner--they will melt to your liner.

Heat the liners
We use a oven designed specifically for thermal liners. If you're using your oven at home, use the convection function, and pre-heat it to 275 degrees F. Place the liners on a tin-foil covered cookie sheet on the rack in the center of your oven. Within about 12 minutes, the liners should have "puffed-up" noticeably and should be ready to mold.

Prepare your feet
While the liners are heating, place your foot bed (use whatever foot bed you'll have in the boot when skiing) under your foot and add a toe-cap over your toes. You can cut the tip out of a thick sock to make a toe cap, and add a few spacers between toes to open up more space in the toe area. For a performance fit, don't put a sock on.

Slip a thin sock or panty hose over the foot, toe-cap, and foot bed to hold it all in place

Mold the liners
Pull one liner from the oven and put it on your foot, making sure the foot bed is all the way in the heel cup of the liner. Check that the liner is straight, and over-lap the liner so it is snug around your lower leg.

Slide the liner (with your foot in it) into the shell - making sure it goes in straight without any wrinkles or folds. Pull up on the top of the liner once it is in, and then buckle the shell. The tighter you buckle the shell, the looser the liner will fit once molded. Kick the heel of the boot against the floor a couple of times to insure your heel is all the way back in the boot.

Get the second liner and repeat the process listed above. Try to stand still, in a neutral stance (slightly forward flexed) for 10 minutes while the liner cools and molds.  It helps to put a piece of wood under the toes to force your heel back into the pocket.

Check the mold
Remove your liners from the boot shells. Make sure both liners look centered and have no folds or wrinkles. Take off your toe caps and put the insoles into the bottom of the liners. Slide the liners back into the shells. Put your feet in them and make sure they feel good. If there are any problems, you can mold them again. Liners can be molded up to 5 times.
